Mission Statement
The Division of Humanities strives to create a Christian atmosphere in which students are taught to write effectively, communicate clearly, comprehend the nature of language, think critically about literature, and foster an awareness of the history and political systems of both the United States and diverse other parts of the world.
Vision Statement
The Division of Humanities accomplishes its mission by:
- encouraging students to integrate their academic pursuits and Christian faith;
- helping students to develop skills in written and oral communication;
- teaching students to understand the nature of the English and other languages;
- inspiring students to think critically about history, political science, communication, literature, and language
Area of Language and Literature
English
The study of the English language and literature is directed toward helping students acquire skills in writing effectively and in reading and evaluating literature. The variety of courses offered suggests both the need students have for communicating their ideas clearly and the need they have for creating and responding to the aesthetic
Bob R. Derryberry Area of Communication Arts
Mission Statement
The Bob R. Derryberry Area of Communication, named after long-time professor in communication and forensics, exists to help students discover and maximize their God-given voices through rigorous study, engaging performances, and the thoughtful application of the dynamic arts of human communication.
General Studies
The General Studies programs (B.S. and A.A.) provide students with the opportunity to explore multiple different areas of studies. The program is designed to be adaptable and achievable to allow students to complete an undergraduate program. For this reason, the degree is not available to freshmen or sophomore students.
