Ed & Theo Clark University Success Center (Faculty)
University Success Center
Mission Statement
The Ed & Theo Clark University Success Center seeks to support students in developing skills for college success, thinking critically to make informed decisions, and identifying personal values for continued growth.
University Success Center Programming
The University Success Center (USC) promotes student success through proactive advising, first-year general education courses, and various student support programs. The USC offers support through Disability Services, Tutoring, Career Services, Cornerstone and Success Coaching. The initiatives are geared towards helping students transition to college and connect to the campus community.
Disability Services
To ensure that all students are able to successfully participate in SBU academics, SBU’s Accessibility Coordinator will work with professors to determine suitable academic accommodations after receiving the appropriate documentation. In accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act, SBU provides equal access to educational opportunities to qualified students with physical or learning disabilities.
Tutoring
University Success Coaches are available to assist students of all majors and academic needs with comprehension of course material as well as in the development of study, research, analytical, reading, writing and critical thinking skills. In the evening, the USC provides generalized and course specific tutoring with writing assignments, mathematics, and science.
Career Services
Within the USC, various career services supports are available. Students will receive assistance with resume writing, cover letters, headshots, and mock interviews. Handshake is utilized to connect students to local and national jobs, internships, and other career opportunities.
Cornerstone
Cornerstone utilizes USC Success Coaches to connect with students to engage students in cultivating the skills they need to be successful in college. This support structure is for students in their first-year of college who have demonstrated the need for additional support.
Success Coaching
Each first-year student is assigned a Success Coach within the USC to help them with their initial schedule, transition to college, and academic support throughout the year. The Success Coaches also work on academic skills and accountability with any students on probation.
University Studies Courses
University Seminar (UNI 1111 /HON 1111 ) and Introduction to Critical Thinking (UNI 1121 /HON 1121 ) are general education courses overseen by the Success Center. All first-year students are required to enroll in UNI 1111 /HON 1111 (University Seminar) during the first semester and UNI 1121 /HON 1121 (Introduction to Critical Thinking) during the second semester. These courses are designed to promote an understanding of a personal value system, the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, and the ability to use higher order thinking skills.
